That was the great news announcement made to us today concerning our Exclusive Wine Club. Our Supplier is now offering this great wine for sale by the bottle. Now that sounds silly – they did not sell it by the keg before.
What I am trying to say is that now, if you would like to buy a single special bottle of wine for a special occasion, you can buy one or more bottles without the commitment to the club.
These are the same great wines that we all have been enjoying for the past months and they are now being offered to referred customers on a single bottle basis. Of course, you will miss out on the excitement of getting those monthly surprise boxes that we all get, but you can sample one or more of the wines. My First Bottle of Red
In one of my first deliveries, I received a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon from California. I am not normally a red wine drinker. You see, I usually prefer the whites, but this red was absolutely delicious. Also, I take a lot of medication and my doctor reluctantly told me that it would be okay for me to have a half glass a day.
Well, don’t tell him, but after that first half glass, I had to refill the glass to the brim. And it was red. Remember, I don’t like red. Red usually makes me flush. But I had no flushing with this wine. It was so smooth and delightful. Shhh – don’t tell but I still have one bottle. Guess I should put it under lock and hide the key.
Tasting Notes
With each bottle of wine, our supplier sends they include a Tasting Notes Card which describes the wine and suggests a perfect dinner pairing for that wine. With my 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon the notes told me that it was a medium-to-full body wine with a rich fruit flavor and a hint of spice. The Notes told that it came from a small vineyard in California. And it told me to notice the blackberry and cherry flavor with just a hint of red currants.
The Note also suggested I serve it with a Braised Pork Shank, which can be prepared in a slow cooker. Since I live alone, that is too much meat for me, so I prepared baked pork chops to enjoy with it.
Imagine getting that information on a bottle of wine from the grocery store. And imagine bringing this bottle of wine as a hostess gift. I’m sure you’d get another invitation right away.
The Wine Whisperer
I am far from a wine expert. I know the names of some reds and some whites and I had a favorite before I started this — White Zinfandel. It is a rose’, one of the grocery store Kool-aides. But since I’ve joined this club I am getting quite an education. It is so interesting. This past week the “Whisperer” was comparing Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon. And he talks about why there are different kinds. The simple part of his talk that I remember was the three things that can make a wine different.
First, the kind of grape itself. Second, where it is grown – the climate, the soil, the weather conditions for that season. And, third, who is making the wine. Each vineyard and each wine maker is different, so you get different results. From year to year and grape to grape.
